Alright so Im new to ZFS.

My new build:
MSI H77 mobo
Pentium G630
8gb ram
3x 2tb WD Red
1x 2tb Seagate 7200
2x 750mb WD Green

What I want to use :
1 drive for parity
Avoid wasting space on the other drives.

So how do I set this up ?

Is there a way to use ZFS Raid-Z1 with all those drives.
Or the only way is 4x2tb pool with 1 drive parity, and like 2x750gb Raid-1

Also does it matter if I have 3x2tb WD Red, and 1x2tb Seagate 7200, Can I mix them up in ZFS, same capacity different brand ?
What would you guys recommend me to do ?

Same capacity, different brand is fine.

But you can't add the smaller disks to the pool (without losing lots of capacity). You will need to do the 4 2 TBs in RAIDZ and something else with the smaller disks.

Perhaps ZFS mirror them, if you need redundancy on all data.

I'd do 2 vdevs. One of 4x2TB in RAIDZ1 or RAIDZ2, and 2x750GB in RAID1.

Or, crazy idea, sell the 2 750 GB drives and get another 2 TB drive, or two 1 TB drives, union them and add them as a single drive entity to the 2 TB RAIDZ pool.

guys i guess my question is a little redundant here - but i am lost with the capacity bits under freeNAS - would appreciate your feedback

10 DRIVES RECOGNIZED BUT THE total TB's don't add up

hey guys! hope everyone is well (especially on the eastern seaboard!)
i finally managed to finally get everything docked and ready from the hardware point of view! that took me a while (sorry novice here so a little slow!)

Corsair Obsidian Series Black 650D Mid Tower Computer Case (CC650DW-1)
MSI Z68A-G43 (G3)- LGA1155 Intel Z68 Express Chipset

Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold (SPG) 1200 Watts Modular Power Supply

Intel Core i3-2120 Dual-Core Processor 3.3 GHz 3 MB Cache LGA 1155 - BX80623I32120

The hard drives are the regular run of the mill in these capacities - green drives and one WD Blue Drive: (would u suggest having different VDEVS for different set here??)

4 X 1TB * = *4
3X 2TB*= *6
2X 3TB *= *6
1X * 750GB = *750 GB *

16TB physical*
-3tb overhead (in theory)

i should end up at least with 12 TB OR 10TB ---

BUT WHATS SHOWING under
RAIDZ IS 5.6TB*and
under RAIDZ2 5.3TB

Would appreciate anyone who can further my fruitful exploration before i actually start moving my DATA files on this
bad boy …. cheers

Holy smokes.. how many times are you going to post the exact same answer. Honestly, if I had known you had posted to as many places as you have, I would have answered with "try one thread next time" and not answered your thread. Alot of other people may not even reply because they'll see all your posts and decide to ignore you because you were posting all over the place.
