First thanks for being such a supportive forum.
After close to 10 years of a tiny HP Microserver.
I want to move on to some more powerful hardware, as the HP Microserver was struggling with simple HD transcoding for Plex.
I have a rack already with a network switch in a place where I can house the new server comfortably, without concern for noise.
I've read the hardware guide in detail. I'm keen to source old parts off eBay, partly because my efforts dont always go as planned.
My objectives are to:
- Have a platform that can keep up with the Truenas software
- Plex transcoding of 4k videos (mainly shot on phones/camera). Ideally using hardware transcoding as it seems to helpful at reducing CPU usage I understand. Probably 4 drives as minimum
- Nextcloud
- Latest versions of FreeBSD support (I've ended up running into problems with this on my microserver)
- Anything else you experts would suggest
I've found 1) Supermicro rack 1U chassis/psu with 4 bays which goes with the following 2) Motherboard X11SSH-F 3) I plan to get Intel E3-12XXv5 with igpu to support hardware transcode. I think I can get the above 3 for about 300 gbp
I will have to source new drives, RAM
Are there any 'watch outs' based on this approach? Am I building a dinosaur when there is a much more sensible / cost effective approach
I know there are many experts on here (of which I am not one), so I appreciate your views and thoughts.
