Hi,

I have been playing with freenas v9 and come up wit a few issues - which I resolve after reading some posts, around storage using adpatec cards (5805 and 3805), after re-configuring them and creating volumes for each disk it finally worked.

This is a new system not in production as yet, so I am laying around with different scenarios and practicing replacing disk and adding in new vdev's to s zpool.

I have few questions.
Question 1:
I have 10 - 3tb drive (in a raidz2), 4 - 2tb in a raidz2 and 1 - 1tb drive.
I was think of making the 1tb drive a L2ARC or should it be a ZIL?

Question 2:
If create zpool with the 10 3tb drives, and latter try to add the 4 2tb drive it does not let me, giving me an error.
Can this be done or do the vdev's need to be the same configuration?

Question 3:
I have an Intel pro/1000 PT quad port nic, but freenas does not recognize it, can canyon help with this?
I also have a Intel pro/1000 PT dual port nic, and they work fine, also the onbard nic's are working as well, no issues with them.
I would like to use the quad port rather then 2 dual ports and this saves on pci slots.

Thank you in advance
George.

don't bother.

you should be able to add the new VDEV to the pool. Typically an actual error message would help troubleshoot this, rather than 'It doesn't work'

A. what is your onboard chipset?
B. why do you think you need more than one port? why do you think you need more than 2 ports?

You need to get rid of the Adaptec controllers or there is misery in your future. Replace them with a decent LSI HBA like the 9211-8i.

Hi,

As for the first part, I won't bother and remove the 1tb drive from the system, and add to the desktop..

As for the second part I had figured that out just after I posted - Volume manager has a button at the bottom called "Manual Setup", I used that and it worked.

Now to the third part.
The MB is a gigabyte G1 Sniper3, it has Intel GbE Lan phy and a Qualcomm Aheros Killer E2201 chip sets.
Why do I need the ports?
Need them because I have four servers ( 3 esxi 5 and 1 windows 2012R2 which is the File and print server for the AD domain).

I will be making direct connection to the FreeNas server ( not going to switch) and each port will have its own ip for use with iSCI - hence the four ports one for each server.
Rough network diagram.

The others 2 ports will be used for the other normal/management traffic.

As this is a new build and still in the testing phase I am open to any suggestions.

OK will take under advisement and look at getting a couple of LSI HBA 9211-8i fro ebay.

You know that you shouldn't have all the ports on the same subnet right?

This is a spare board that was lying around, and cannot afford to get another at the moment.
So this will have to do for now.
