Hi,

I'm new here, obviously, cause i'm in the newbie thread.
I've managed to set up my freenas and gain acces to the drive with several clients.
But now i'm trying to install the miniDLNA plugin.
However my plugins are not appearing (No entry has been found)
I've searched the forum but after two hours I can't see the forest behind the trees anymore.

I keep having the following errorcode:

Code:
May 23 00:12:44 FREENAS ntpd_initres[1950]: host name not found: 1.freebsd.pool.ntp.org
May 23 00:12:44 FREENAS ntpd_initres[1950]: host name not found: 2.freebsd.pool.ntp.org
May 23 00:14:46 FREENAS ntpd_initres[1950]: host name not found: 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org
May 23 00:14:46 FREENAS kernel: arpresolve: can't allocate llinfo for 192.168.0.1
May 23 00:14:46 FREENAS last message repeated 23 times

I am not able to ping 8.8.8.8 in shell:
it says "ping: sendto: Invalid argument

Hostname: FREENAS
Domain: local
IPv4 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Nameserver 1: 8.8.8.8
Nameserver 2: 8.8.4.4

With this information, can somebody help me back in the right direction.
All I need is that plugin.

So, it looks like your problem is that you cannot resolve DNS addresses.

First, you need to make sure that your network is set up correctly: you need an IP address, your gateway, and one or more DNS servers. If you can access your FreeNAS web GUI from a computer on your network, you have the IP address set up correctly. Try pinging a local computer from the FreeNAS box.

My guess is that you don't have the gateway setup correctly. Please check step 4 in the wiki: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Initial_Setup

Also check your subnet mask. It probably should be: 255.255.255.0

Thank you for your replies.

I've entered the following for the freenasbox (in the webGUI):

Hostname: FREENAS
Domain: local
IPv4 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Nameserver 1: 195.130.130.132
Nameserver 2: 195.130.131.132

I got this information from my laptop.
I can ping from the freenasbox to my laptop.
From my laptop i can ping to 192.168.0.1
I cannot ping from the freenasbox to 192.168.0.1

As for the subnet mask, i've been looking and i have no idea where to enter this.
In my network summary (webGUI) it says
IPv4 Address
re0
192.168.0.142/24

So it looks like the mask is correct to me.

What kind of hardware is your gateway?

The router provided by my internetprovider. Wireless with a few ethernetports.
I do know that they give your router an IP and you keep it for several weeks.
I don't think that's a standard way of working.

How did you assign the IP address to you FreeNAS box? Are you using DHCP or did you pick a static address? If you did pick a static address, are you sure it isn't in the DHCP range? (You should be able to view the DHCP range on the router).

Is the freenas box plugged into your router with an ethernet cable?

I used DHCP and yes it's plugged in with an ethernet cable.
I installed freenas, plugged it in, booted it up and it gave me the ip for my webGUI.

Okay, to make things a little more weird.
Just after posting i was planning on shutting down the freenasbox. It's still in the living room for the moment and my 1-year old is giving it too much attention.
Thought i would try the plugins one more time... it worked... i'm currently downloading miniDNLA.
So an explanation is still welcome, but i'm already pretty happy.

Modern babies ;) know for the fact that computers are interesting developmental toys. They love keyboards, power buttons (especially ones with the light) and reset switches. Unplugging and plugging cables back in is more for toddler enjoyment.

I would repeat the whole installation anew, with your one-year old 100% confirmed to be not interfering (try one hand on FreeNAS and the other on a cradle). Since, I hope, you documented all the steps performed, that should be an easy task. If you did not document, that would be your opportunity...
