Hey everyone.
Wanted to ask a couple questions about my setup in my home lab, mostly geared towards networking.

Running 9.2.1.8 and mostly have been tinkering around (learning the GUI and CLI).
Running my setup on a SuperMicro board which has a TPMI port and 2 NIC ports onboard.
Have a ESXi server in my lab that I want to server up NFS/iSCSI storage.

I have been testing mounting NFS shares on my ESXi box but have ran into some issues. My gut tells me its networking on my FreeNAS box. Let me quickly run down what i have setup.

I have been using the TPMI port to power up my FreeNAS box (its completely headless setup) and one of the onboard NIC's (em0) has been configured with a IP address. The catch is, both the TPMI port and em0 are on the same network and I am wondering if that could be part of the problem, which is what i wanted to ask here.

I think i read in the manual that i can use LAN1 port on the SuperMicro board to act as the TPMI as well as a NIC1 port as well?

It is probably a pretty easy question, but just wanted to ask here for some suggestions from a lot o folks currently running FreeNAS in their environments.

Moving forward, I would like to have a storage VLAN to copy data to and from my ESXi server, allowing me to separate that traffic from the rest of my lab environment. That is my plan moving forward.

Thanks,

TCG

Dedicated IPMI and the onboard NICs do not interfere. You can have them on the same network (don't do this in an enterprise environment, there are some security implications).

Good to know.
I am working through some challenges with mounting NFS shares on a Solaris machine as well as my ESXi box. I am getting some errors on both. My solaris box is saying it times out, which is interesting.
I am re-reading setup/config for network and storage, trying to narrow down what the issue may be.

Any suggestions on anything i should be looking for or be aware of as I plan my environment?

Thanks,

TCG
