So I'm currently trying to create a 10gig connection directly between my NAS and my gaming PC(my only PC). Before I found out about this forum I was getting help from the LTT forums and they said I should be able this easily without getting any routers or switches involved. I was essentially told that all I needed to do was setup a static IP that was on a different subnet mask for my pc, and for my NAS. I set the IPv4 on my PC to 192.168.1.2 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. I set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1, which I saw on another forum post can work well in this situation.

My issue is trying to configure the NAS. When I set the IP to 192.168.1.3/24 in TrueNAS scale, it immediately asks me for a new default gateway. It seems .like its trying to change the default gateway for the onboard gigabit nic I'm using to access the internet. I tried once just entering the gateway for that nic and testing it for 60 seconds, which immediately terminated my access. I'm kind of stuck here. If anyone has any ideas as to how to set this up I would greatly appreciate it.

You're a little mixed up there...

You need a different subnet (probably with the same subnet mask).

Your main NAS connection (probably Gigabit) should be the one on whatever your home network is (looks like you're saying maybe it's 192.168.1.x/24). (the /24 here represents a 24-bit subnet mask which is sometimes shown as 255.255.255.0)

If you're trying to set the dedicated connection up on the 10G network, it needs to use a different subnet (and you will not specify a gateway at all for it since the default gateway is on your Gigabit connection on your home network)

I would suggest you use addresses on the 192.168.2.x/24 network/subnet for your 10G connection, so NAS 10G set to 192.168.2.2/24 and the PC set to 192.168.2.3/24 (/24 as above meaning the subnet mask to use is 255.255.255.0).

Took me 4 hours last night lol, but I finally managed to transfer a test folder at around 1000MB/s from ssd to ssd last night. Only have half my array installed so far, so was only getting around 400MB/s on the drives, but hopefully going from 4 to 8 drives helps that.

Thank you for clarifying the difference between subnet and subnet mask. I actually was ok with 192.168.1.x because my default with my router is 192.168.12.x. But yeah everything works. Last thing I need to figure out is some badblocks test but I think I can do it lol.
