I currently have a 4x4tb RAID Z2 configuration on a Supermicro Avoton C2750 with 6 total SATA ports.

I'd like to add 2 additional 4tb drives for a 6x4TB RAID Z2 config. I bought an additional 6TB to hold my data so I can create the 6x4tb Z2.

The obvious issue is that once I create the 6x4tb pool, Ill be maxxed out on SATA ports and be unable to transfer my data. So how should I mount the 6TB disc (that has my data) to copy over to my 6x4tb pool?

So far I took a snapshot of my 4x4tb pool, and used ZFS replication to transfer data over to the single 6tb disk. I was thinking after I created the new 6x4tb pool, I would import the single temp 6tb volume by USB3 port and copy data back over to my newly created pool.

I think that sounds about right but thought I should probably bounce the idea off some of the more experienced members before I destroy and create my new pool.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

USB3 is not well supported in 9.3. Use eSATA if possible, USB2 if not.

I already have USB3 enabled for my UPS and it works just fine. But thx for the advice

Or, you can be crazy, if you like.

Format the 6 drive pool, remove one of the drives,
that puts the pool in degraded state, of course,
then pop your 6TB on the now-free SATA port,
import that disk onto the degraded pool,
pop it off,
replace with the missing 6th disk,
resilver. Boom, done. Ghetto, yes, but done.

Or, use a client machine over the network.

Or, use FTP.

I have given you three solutions!

Actually I have a few questions, as I initially created a new volume to copy all the data over to the 6tb disk.

Will it matter when I import the disk to the new pool? Would I "import disk" or "import volume" ? Im thinking it would be import disk. And shouldnt it resilver at that point? Or does it just distribute the data on the 6tb throughout the whole pool. Isnt that the resilvering? And then again, when I put the original 4tb back in the pool?

Also, there's about 5TiB of data on that temp disk. I thought that larger sized disk would be cutoff at the smallest disk size. Would that pose a problem as well?

I'm not sure I understand the questions. But I'll try to answer anyway.

If you are saying you took that 6TB disk, you actually formatted it as a 1-disk vdev in FreeNAS with ZFS, then you'll have to "import volume". If (as I thought) it's just formatted the way an external or internal drive would be in Windows, then you're going to want "import disk". If you are "import volume"ing that disk, then you are essentially mounting another pool alongside the 6 drive pool, and once mounted, you will copy from one pool to the other, presumably with either unix file commands, or with a ZFS send. Then, you will detach that second (single disk) pool permanently from the NAS. Then, you will reattach the missing 4TB drive, go into your storage screen, and "replace" the "failed" drive with the one you just plugged in. At that point, the appropriate slices of data on the other 5 drive will "resilver" onto the 6th drive.

If you are "import disk"ing that disk, then, at the time you import disk, you will see that you have no choice, and the whole disk is simply copied over to the pool you specify. Once that operation is done, you detach that disk you just imported, reattach the missing 4TB disk, and then, as above, it will be resilvered.

"The larger size disk being cut off at the smallest size"---as for that, that is for when you are creating a vdev. Within a vdev, the size of each disk is presumed to be the size of the smallest disk in the vdev. In your case, your 6TB drive is not even part of the same pool (much less the same vdev) as the 4TB drive, so this question is not relevant.

I hope this makes sense.

Gah! Third time this week that the sleeping monster of degraded-from-the-start-vdevs rears its ugly head!

At least it's RAIDZ2 missing one drive, this time. That's a reasonable solution, in a pinch.

Hmmmmm.....I think so...

To be sure I understand correctly,

- Create 6x4tb vdev
- Remove 1x4tb disk and replace with temp 6tb disk
- Import Volume
- ZFS send to new pool
- remove temp 6tb and replace with orig 4tb disk
- pool resilvers
- done

Correct me if im wrong but I always thought that once a vdev goes into a degraded state then you can no longer copy to or from that pool until it's been resilvered.
Wouldnt that be the case here?

Yea I hear ya, but the oldest drive is, at most, a year old and they were all purchased separately. Ill take the leap

On the contrary, ZFS will go great lengths to ensure availability. Degraded pools will function "normally" (as in, file operations can be executed normally).

Ohhhh ok, I follow, since its a brand new empty pool and I am manually degrading it myself, it should be available and function just fine.

Got it! Thanks!!!!!

On the contrary, ZFS will go great lengths to ensure availability. Degraded pools will function "normally" (as in, file operations can be executed normally).

I confirm, it's been a few weeks I run with a 8 drives RAID-Z3 with one drive unavailable and there's not a single problem, that's the whole point of using a RAID :)

Lol. You're purposefully running your FreeNAS degraded for a few weeks? Is that the French method?

Yep, I'm doing stress-tests... on a prod system... more than one year after the server creation... It's the best method, trust me ;)

Ok, more seriously, one drive failed so I waited for the RMA, then a long SMART test, then badblocks and now I wait for another long SMART test, then I'll wait for the resilver...

OK, created new vdev, replaced disk, imported temp volume and now trying to perform a zfs send and im getting this

cannot unmount 'var/db/system': Device Busy

followed by a few sub-snapshots that all say "cannot send: 'snapshot': broken pipe"

Any ideas?

Nevermind, I got it!

I guess FreeNAS designates a primary and a secondary volume when there's more than 1 volume in use. After importing my temp volume, I had to detach and reattach the new volume in order to zfs send my data to it. Anyways, its finally transferring now.

Thanks again for all the help!

I'm very confused. I think you're using the wrong words in spots. But I trust you got something going.

Let me know how it pans out.
