I'm a bit confused. This is a recent installation, fresh start. Version 9.2.1.9 since my system won't boot any later from USB properly. My system now seems to just hang or stop responding completely at times, and it seems it's always for the same amount of time, and it seems to happen at specific times, though not always the same ones. First it was up and running for 4-5 days without any problems, now all of a sudden I've gotten four or so timeouts the past 24 hours. It always seem to last for about 25 minutes, and the system reports just go blank that time. Memory usage, up time, everything just goes to 0, and then after about 25 minutes just start logging everything like normal.

I'm guessing it is some process that starts at certain times that causes this, since it seems to always happen one minute before a full hour, like 16:59 or 11:59, but I don't know how to check this. Can anyone point me in the right direction or guide me through some log file or something? I'm a newbie at this so please dumb it down for me.

I need to figure out what is happening at those set times when the system stops responding, so I know if it's fixable or if I need new hardware.

No I don't think the USB drive is the issue, since I tried installing on three different drives with the same result, using different USB ports and everything. The system simply has trouble reading the drive when a later version than 9.2.x is installed on it. The later versions seem to use something different. I read someone else had the same issue and fixed it with a bios update, but I'm already at the last bios they released for my mobo, so I will have to stick with 9.2.1.9 for now. Might get a small SSD later, but I still think this issue is something else entirely.

I've been checking what happens in the processes every hour on the dot, and the only thing I've seen is that bsdtar does something which consumes a bit of CPU, but it only lasts for a few seconds. Haven't had a a crash yet while watching the processes though. Could this process be the problem, and what does it do every hour? I haven't got any plugins installed, which is the only thing I'm finding when googling it. Someone had reported an issue with bdstar and 100% CPU utilization causing system hangs... Can't find anything further on that, and when it isn't crashing it seems to only jump up to about 45% CPU utilization for those seconds (single core it seems as well). Might be it jumps higher sometimes and that causes a system hang?

You could run something like htop in a ssh session and watch what is happening.

Trying to find info on how to do this, but not having any luck. Like I said, complete noob at this and Linux/Unix as a whole. I need some sort of guide to get me through a process like that I'm afraid, or I'd probably just mess everything up. No idea how to install htop on my FreeNAS system. I at least know how to get an SSH session up with putty, but that's about it.

I think it's part of the install. It's been to long. Top should work if htop doesn't. I prefer htop personally. If you need to install them just google freshports and read their FAQ. I didn't know anything about BSD when I started and Google helped me a ton. Also don't just willy nilly use CLI commands as root. You can do a man (command) to read the help file associated with commands. Also if you can't find something whereis is a very useful command. Sorry can't give you more. I'm stuck on my phone for the next few weeks.
