Hello,

I need help to build my FreeNAS system as a NAS for file storage and for my plex media server.
It shouldn't cost more than 800€.

Things I already though about:

3000GB WD Red WD30EFRX 64MB 3.5" * 2 times (200€)

Fractal Define R4 (85 €)

450 Watt Seasonic G-Series Modular 80+ Gold (75€)

120GB Samsung 840 Evo Series (68€)

Corsair Hydro Series H60 2nd Gen. (59€)

Minimum 8 GB RAM (you decide) - ECC or not ?! -
Minimum Quad Core CPU (you decide)
Motherboard (you decide) - ECC or not ?! -

For looking up parts mentioned above please double check if they are available on:

Dude, we are not going to design your NAS for you, much less shop on your preferred websites for you.

If you want some advice, read the forums and the countless build threads, and create your own build. And then we'll be happy to offer advice on that build.

For starters, I'm not sure what you're planning on doing with that SSD. FreeNAS is designed to run from a flash drive, and won't take up more than about 4GB whether you have the space or not.

I love it.. not only does he want us to build his system, he throws a relatively small budget value out there, then orders an SSD and water cooling....

Priceless!

SSD is to reduce power consumption. An IT magazine had an article about freenas builds that all used ssds.
Watercooling is to exhaust the hot air directly out of the case with just one fan, and it does not cost more than a tower cpu cooler.

Is there nobody in this entire forum that can recommend a CPU, Mobo, Ram combination for my budget?

Have you checked out our manual at all? We recommend USB sticks. Not only because they are low on power consumption, but you free up a SATA port AND it's cheaper than an SSD. So not only did the IT magazine give bad advice by recommending more expensive hardware we give even better advice than whatever IT magazine you are quoting. Do yourself a favor and stop looking at that magazine and read our manual, our stickies, and do some forum reading. All of the answers you need are here.

Doesn't cost more than a CPU cooler? I've *never* paid as much as that CPU cooler for any of mine.. ever. There's just no value in spending money on that cooler. If your cooling needs have a margin so razor-thin that you have to resort to forcing the hot air out the back with a water cooler you've failed to design enough margin in your system to deal with temperature fluctuations that you'll deal with long-term anyway. You're also going to need fans that directly blow over your hard drives. If your case doesn't support that(or you don't plan to add them) you're going to cook your drives anyway.

And no, we do NOT provide recommendations for building the meat of a system. We stopped doing that years ago because:

1. We have better things to do than build a system for other people.
2. They then argue every little piece.
3. They don't like the choices and often ignore them anyway.
4. We can't account for your personal considerations.. such as size, cost for hardware in your locale, actual access to the hardware to purchase, etc.
5. There's literally hundreds of builds in the forum already of fully working systems.

As such, I am going to lock this thread as there is nothing more to be said. Feel free to start a new thread when you have a parts list. Here's a hint since you are new.... if you don't read our manual, stickies, and do some searching and just throw stuff up there expect us to flog you for not following our recommendations. Building a server is not the same as a desktop. Totally different considerations and totally different needs.
