Touch of back ground and I'm sorry in advance if I get wordy.
My 6yo home build system with 6x4T drives and a Huge 8GB of memory started to with that I started to panic.
But after much searching and assistance from the fourm I ordered 2 more 'older' Like:Like drives.
Now, having noticed that 8GB was not enough memory any more, I started looking for an upgrade. I found someone that had a Dell R510 with H310 Raid card. for a very good price. I had issues not able to flash the 310 while it was plugged to the Dell. After a few days of trying different things, and I opted for Ebay. There are Hundreds of 310 cards with the P20 IT mode flash that I just gave up and ordered one.
Those P20 IT mode cards are GOLD. They work as everyone suggests. You just plug it in and boot up. All drives show up correctly. Do NOT Use Raid cards even in RAID0 mode..
I opted to spend a little more and bump my onboard memory to 64GBECC and on to the next panic..
I was not sure how to flip the new disks into the pool.. I was not sure how to test the disks before I did. Again, back to the fourm and found the direction I needed.
I ran some burn-in scripts and found that one of my new drives glitched into some errors, BUT smartctl and frankly, the second run of Badblocks showed Nothing wrong.
someone suggested perhaps a cable was flakey. I shut everything down and reseated cables and drive and started things up again. Badblocks Takes ~60 hours on my 4TB drive. But in the end I had more confidence with FreeNas and what the drives were doing.
Last bit of panic.. I setup in RaidZ2 because I'm very much paranoid about the data I have, with 2 drives doing the Current pending, I wanted to get them flipped. Following the instructions I took the first drive offline, degraded the pool and started the replace. 5 or 10 min in, I was reading more posts about replacing non-failed but failing drives and it was suggested to leave the drive ONLINE. I hem-hawed for another few minutes and on-lined the drive. Pool came up solid AND still moved on with the replacement. For me this process was just long, but seamless. I Flipped Da0 for Da1, finished running badblocks again on the replacement drives.... flipped da4-da5 and everything is back. Solid Green.
After all this I opted to re-run badblocks again on the Currently Pending sector drives as they are WELL out of warranty. My phase 2 is going to be replace the old motherboard in original system. Install H310 and flash to P20. Take the odd disks left over from this adventure and build a replication destination for the more critical data.
It has been said many times and may ways... But..
Raid is not Backup. While I use this super cool software for backing up my household computers AND I have a few file shares... (My Tax files..) I realized that this setup is better than most, but still not ideal.
OH I forgot to add one thing... For all of you that are using a USB flash drive for booting.... IT WILL DIE! and that will be at the most IMPOSSIBLE time for you. if you can't install a real SSD or spare HD for the boot device. Get 2 identical and Mirror them! The odds they will die at the same time are slim.
All in all, I have posted a few "help me obi1" posts and all the replies have been Helpful. Even after searching and not finding what clearly was in the forums, people here are super helpful. With all that.. IF you found your way here via a search term and / or to the bottom of my TL : DR post, I would be happy to assist in any way I can as well.
Thanks team!
