Hello all,

The plan:

Gen8-01 Proxmox + backups

Gen8-02 TrueNAS Scale with 8 * 4TB DELL Enterprise SAS 7.2k - RaidZ2
  • this is where I don't know if it work, I want to use the backpane of the Gen8-03 for my TrueNAS in the Gen8-02
  • the IBM ServeRAID M1015 can run 4 drives on each port, so I was thinking on use the 2nd port to connect the backpane of the Gen8-03 (just pass the cable from one host to the other)
  • will this work? will the Gen8-02 be capable of handling 32TB ? will use RaidZ2

Gen8-03
Proxmox + Home Assistant + LXC containers

This is the Hardware:

Gen8-01
E3-1230 v2 @ 3.30GHz + 65w Original heatsink
16GB NON-ECC
4 * 4TB WD RED PLUS
1 * 500GB - Samsung SSD 870 EVO - ODD adapter
1 * 8GB USB KEY for boot
iLO License Advanced
Filter support for the disks

Gen8-02:

16GB ECC
4 * 4TB DELL Enterprise SAS 7.2k
1 * IBM ServeRAID M1015 46C8933 (IT MODE) - still waiting for this card, hope it will be easy to flash on IT mode
1 * 500GB - Samsung SSD 870 EVO - ODD adapter
1 * 32 GB for boot
iLO License Advanced
Filter support for the disks

Gen8-03:
G2020T @ 2.50GHz (will upgrade to the E3-1265L V2 @ 2.50GHz )
8GB ECC (will upgrade to 16GB ECC)

Indeed you wish to use your 2nd HPE Gen8 Microserver as a JBOD.
The HPE Microserver Gen8 is a very popular platform to run TrueNAS but not as a JBOD.
It may work but it is very risky: if you encounter issues, nobody can help you on the forum.

My question is what is better to do (type of pool) in case the 2nd gen8 goes down and to minimise the risk of lost data.
  1. Should I go for 2 raidz2 pools? -> gen8-2 goes down -> lost his pool so can't use it -> gen8-2goes up -> pool available
  2. Should I mirror first gen8 to the 2nd Gen8? -> gen8-2 goes down -> I lost the mirror -> can use the pool -> gen8-2 goes up - resilvered mirror without losing data - will this work??
  3. any other option?

I think that the best solution is to have only one pool per Microserver (solution 1)
because it would be easy to recover the data in case of issue (just move the 4 disks in another Microserver)
