So today I picked up off of CL a new Supermicro server that came with 12 1TB drives in it. My current setup is just 4 2TB drives and well we're running out of space and my system needs a rebuild anyways.

What I'm trying to find out though is whats the best method for moving from old to new? Should I setup rsync to just rsync it all from the existing to the new server? I don't want to take my existing pool over to the new one. I will ultimately take the 4 2TB drives and throw em in this new box so that as these 1TB die off I'll slowly upgrade them with 2TB drives. That way when its all said and done I'll have 20TB :).

I also want to move all of my jails with it as well. If this isn't possible and I just need to install fresh jails I can. Thank you all in advance for your help with this.

you want to look into zfs send.

Also you should use 6drive z2 vdevs x2. 12drive vdevs are totally not good. Each VDEV only expands if you drop in disks who are all the same size, so you need to replace the 6 drives of the first vdev first before you can upgrade the second vdev.

Thank you for the tips. I recreated my volume as you suggested and currently have the zfs send working away at it. I know this is going to take some time especially since this new box only has 2G of RAM in it at the moment. Once the new box is setup I can harvest the RAM from the old box and throw it in here. I didn't realize when I bought this that the DDR2 that it wants is something I don't have. I have over 20 sticks here at home of DDR2 but not the right stuff. But my current FreeNAS does have the right stuff in it so just have to deal with the slowness until this migration is complete
