After installing, I've noticed two different versions reported:
1) 8.1-RELEASE, in the SSH session before the MOTD:
Code:
Copyright (c) 1980, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994
The Regents of the University of California. All rights reserved.

FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE (FREENAS64) #0: Tue Jun 15 23:56:14 MDT 2010

FreeNAS nanobsd (c) 2009-2010, The FreeNAS Development Team
        All rights reserved.
FreeNAS is under the modified BSD license.

For more information, documentation, help or support, go here:

2) 8.2-RELEASE-p2, in the boot sequence and the web-gui.

I presume that it is actually 8.2, but some resources probably needs to be fixed.

It's been fixed in later releases because /etc is no longer read-only. The version string input there is bogus, but is updated at boot with a proper version when /etc/rc.d/motd is run -- only in newer versions of FreeBSD is a bogus version input to avoid having to commit changes to the motd when the version changes :)...
