That is idiotic... the one thing that makes E5 so amazing (high RAM capacity) is the one thing they neutered.

That was about my impression as well. Xeon D is a lot more exciting than that.

  • Surprisingly strong single-threaded performance
  • Smashing multi-threaded performance
  • Idle power is higher than Haswell Xeon E3 - probably due to the integrated 10GbE stuff, I guess.
  • Performance per Watt while doing actual work is said to be much better than Haswell Xeon E3.

Looks like Xeon D is a strong performer.

I know I said it before in another thread but I sure hope the performance is indicative of whats in store for Skylake. I'm long overdue for a new desktop and I'm waiting on Skylake before I pull the trigger.
