Hi, i want to migrate my existing NAS solution to FreeNAS. The current system is as SUPERMICRO A2SDI-4C-HLN4F with 16GB ECC Memory and 4x4TB disks where I use Linux to provide SMB, AFP, http(only to provide a install source) and run some rsync mirrors for internal use. No transcoding or virtualisation.

Target should be same hardware, disk extended to 6x4TB Raidz2 and 2x12TB mirror pool.

The 4TB disks are a mix between WD Red and Seagate Barracuda drives. If on failed i replace it with WD Red, but till then i'll use it. Here I'll buy two new WD Red(CMR version) for the extension to 6x.
The 12TB disks will be Toshiba Enterprise Capacity MG07ACA12TE.

Plan is to setup a temporary freeNAS with a 2x12TB mirror for migration.
Steps then
  1. copy(rsync) the data from the old system to the temporary FreeNAS
  2. Install FreeNAS on the old System with 6x4TB RaidZ2
  3. put the 2x12TB discs from the temporary FreeNAS in and import the pool.
  4. Maybe copy the data back to the other pool.

Question is, is this a possible scenario, with the temporary FreeNAS and transfer the discs to avoid copy the date twice?
As far as i understand it should be possible, without a problem, to move pools physically between systems.

Regards
Ingo

Yes, this should work as you describe.
