So I slap a single hdd to my freenas box to sort of get started and learn.

I order 4 HGST IDK Deskstar NAS 3TB and they will be here this week. How can I go by migrating the data mainly the jails from my temporary drive to the new ones?

TIA.

You'll need to create a new pool. If you can hook the new drives up alongside the old drive, then that makes life a little easier, because once you've done that you can then use a tool like "rsync" (or tar, which I prefer) to copy your data over. There are ways to do this that are more clever and ways to do it that are less clever; as long as you don't mind having to do a little reconfiguration, though, "less clever" is probably better. Just add a new pool, copy the data over, and fix your shares and jails to point to the new pool.

Oh and while the HGST NAS drives are nice, do note that they are 7200 RPM. Be sure to pay particular attention to the cooling in order to increase their service life.

Thanks for pointing it out. I took that in consideration before I made the purchase. I am actually seeking IO so 7200RPM was the choice.
The rack where the mini sits is well cooled and ventilated.
We will see how well the freenas mini does with this drive.

Again thanks!

Regards.
