Migrating to new server (ZFS question)

Hi

I'm migrating to a new server. On my old server I had created 2 datasets on my large datapool. One of them only a few mb and the other almost taking up the rest of the space. The datasets settings were just inherited from the pool.
On my new server I have not created these 2 datasets. Instead they are just folders on the volume.
My question is if I'm missing out something by not creating these 2 datasets.

It doesn't sound like you're missing out relative to your old setup, but you are missing out, probably. Of course, the specifics depend on what you're storing and how it's being treated. Datasets allow you to treat different data differently.

Adding to what @Ericloewe wrote: My first ZFS server was rather similar to what @thxtex describes. I have meanwhile changed to a layout that puts everything that is "semantically" or in terms of ownership different, into its own dataset. So I have quite a few nested datasets. This gives me the option to exercise relatively granular control over things like snapshot retention period etc., even if I don't need it now.
