I'm building a new FreeNAS box and I want to move all my data and my jail (Plex, Sick Beard, etc.). I'm going to setup all my settings from scratch so I make sure I get the best practices. How should I proceed?

Zfs replication if it is a new box being stood up beside the old one.

Does that replicate the jail as well? I'm new to ZFS replication.
It will replicate the entire zpool if you like, but the settings will not come across. The jail is just sitting on the zpool, so the jail data gets copied. The settings are in the freenas config.

I'm in the exact situation here, right now my jails are relocated and now running into separate usb flash drive, and all my data (Movies, Pictures, Videos, etc.) are stored in here ->> (/mnt/tank/mymedia) 4x WD red RAID 5. I did this because I was hoping the HDD to go to standby mode by separating the Jails from the pool but unfortunately it didn't work.

So, I went ahead and purchased some desktop 4x HDD as replacement for my "NEVER go to sleep mode enterprise HDD" (Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive).

Now, how can I proceed on migrating all my data from WD red HDD to the new desktop HDD without losing any single data or file.

You have the same question, but apparently haven't read @pirateghost's answers in this thread--set up a pool on the new disks, run ZFS replication from the old pool to the new pool, (optionally) rename the new pool the the old pool's name, and you're done. That doesn't explain why you'd want to migrate from Reds (which are designed to be spinning 24x7) to desktop drives (which aren't), but that's a separate issue.

Hi dan,
I'm not really familiar with ZFS replication and first time to do this. So, my question is... How to properly setup the new 4x HDD into the Motherboard because all the SATA ports are already occupied by the WD HDD (I didn't use RAID card). I'm assuming maybe I would need to get a separate RAID card for the new Desktop HDDs and copy the exact RAID configuration I made from the old (WD red HDD)?

Thanks.

Are you trying to set up a new server to replace an old server? Or are you wanting to migrate data from old drives to new drives in an existing server? If the latter, you're not "in the exact situation here"--the OP was asking about migrating to a new server.

If you are, in fact, "in the exact situation" as the OP, and are wanting to migrate data from an existing server to a new server, @pirateghost has the answer--ZFS replication. The manual describes how to set it up. If not, some more detailed description of what you're trying to accomplish would be in order (and at least some passing consideration of the forum rules would be nice too).

Sorry for the confusion I made.. Let say I would want to replace only the old WD red HDD with the new Desktop HDD on my existing server (Freenas 9.3). Again, I dont have any RAID card installed on my existing server and so going back to my original question I just wanted to replicate the old hdd (WD) into the new Desktop HDD, so the old WD HDD will be removed from the existing server.

Thanks.

Just like the documentation says, you can replace one disk at a time, wait for the resilver before moving to the next disk. Assuming you have a proper zfs config comprised of multiple disks.

As for the raid card, good. You aren't supposed to be using a raid card.

Yeah, your question has nothing at all to do with the OP. As @pirateghost says, as long as you have a redundant pool configuration (and since you continue to violate or ignore the forum rules, we have no idea what your pool configuration is like), you can simply replace the disks one at a time. The manual has click-by-click instructions for replacing disks. Follow them, and don't ad-lib, otherwise you may break your pool.
