Hi everyone,
I've been around for a while planning my foray into FreeNAS. I've been running a 7+1x2TB mdadm RAID6 system on sketchy hardware for a few years and been lucky so far. Last year I decided to step up to something more solid.
I want to thank everyone on this fantastic forum for their expertise. At first ZFS is a little daunting (hardware requirements, lack of flexibility) but reading here has slowed my build-it-right-now-enthusiasm to a more sober level and I've taken the past months to research and buy good hardware.
So right now I'm running burn-in on an X8SIL-based system and very much looking forward to throwing my 9 TB of mostly backups and Linux ISOs at it.
Tom
P.S. My longest-serving 2TB is a SAMSUNG HD203WI with currently 52360 hours.
