There's an interesting article about HDD preparation at http://blog.backblaze.com/2013/10/28/alas-poor-stephen-is-dead/
Basically they seem to run a sector check on each HDD, then a load test on the assembly.
I'm thinking the first part can be achieved by running badblocks for a few days, but how would people suggest testing out if a pool is working correctly under load before putting a nas into service?
