Application (desirable):
- Data transfer of 1 Terabyte in 1 session by 1 client via internet > 100 Mbps
- Number of users per week: 1
- Total storage size of NAS: 2 Terabyte - 4 Terabyte
- Frequency: 1 data transfer session per week
- Client computer: windows system
- Computer for administration of NAS (= harddisk + 8 GB administration drive): linux system
- Client computer program: WinSCP
- Encryption: of disks of administration computer and NAS harddisk and possibly client computer)
- Encryption: data transfer

1) Is the system with unix FreeNAS 9.2 and Windows Common Internet File System (CIFS) better than a system based on Linux openSSH-server with Windows WinSCP?

2) Is it also possible to use WinSCP instead of CIFS in the system FreeNAS / CIFS?

3) Does CIFS allow also encrypted data transfer like WinSCP?

1) To ensure encryption over CIFS, you'd need to setup a VPN for your client and server. Also I'm not sure if you can resume file transfer with CIFS, some applications may be able to, but WinSCP usually can do so.
2) Yes. You don't need to use CIFS at all, just use SSH in this case.
3) Not sure, but don't think so.

Your questions don't make alot of sense....

Every *nix on the planet has some form of openssh on it. Openssh is the server/client app that allows ssh communications. WinSCP has no relation at all to CIFS. WinSCP is a windows app for transferring files whereas CIFS is essentially a type of network protocol.

Why don't you tell us what you are trying to do and we can tell you if FreeNAS is the best tool for the job or if you should be looking at something else.
