Hello guys, for my first freenas build, I've bought some parts today.
motherboard from supermicro, with two xeon e5405 cpu's, and 16 gigs of ecc ram.
I was planning to use 6 * 2Tb drives, the motherboard has 6 sata ports, so I thought I didn't have to use a raid card. but now, the person I bought it from said that I better install my jails, like plex etc on another storage device than my data. for example a usb stick, or hdd.
is it possible to install them on usb? of does it have to be a hdd?
if hdd, I'd have to use my m1015 card I've got in an other server, I'd rather not, but if I have I can.
Thanks!

Yes, you can install on USB, but it's a horrible idea (performance will be horrible, and you will likely have a device failure very shortly after install, depending on your workload.

You can keep jails on the same pool as your data though. Did the person say why they thought the jails should be on something else?

You can however create a new pool on disks or ssd and move or setup jail root there..

Put your jails in your pool. Don't put it on an external drive. If you must keep them separate, you can on another hard disk or SSD. Do not use USB.
