Hi guys,

I have being looking at all this nas topic for a while, and just recently found out about FreeNAS, and decided to put to good use an old Q6600 with 8gb of ram for my new home setup.

So i have it now setup with 2 x 4tb in ZFS mirror. So far all smooth, the sharing etc all works fine.

The questions arise when it comes to how maintenance etc works. What are the basic steps in regards to keeping your data safe if a hdd fails?

Looking forward to all your comments, and keep in mind i am an absolute newbie at NAS and all this "stuff"

A good "ZFS for Dummies" is cyberjock's sticky thread, the first sticky in this forum. There are also a number of good videos on YouTube, here are a few:

I don't know, though, that any of them answer your question of what to do when a drive fails. The answer is simple: replace the drive, following the instructions in the manual. Routine maintenance consists of running scrubs periodically (weekly or so) and not letting the pool get more than 80% full.
