Backblaze is a pretty good source: Hard Drive Temperature—Does It Matter? However, this post is pretty old and the there was not a clear answer.

However, Secure Data Recovery Services has a newer post The Effects of Thermal Damage on Hard Drives from 2019 that notes:
The average temperature threshold for a mechanical hard drive ranges from 40° Fahrenheit (5° Celsius) to 140° Fahrenheit (60° Celsius). When a device is exposed to heat exceeding this threshold, damage can occur.

WD Red Pro and Thosiba NAS are rated at 0 to 65 degree operation temp and -40 bis 70 standby temp. Lower temps are probably better but not worth the noise in my opinion. WD have a 5y and Toshiba a 3y warranty.

Next time I will try to by helium drives. They are apparently cooler and quieter.
