Integrated SAS3008 or H220/310?

I'm reading conflicting opinions about whether one should use the onboard controller for RAID RAIDz or use an add-on card like the H310.

My new motherboard is H11SSL-C and has 8 SATA 3.0 + Broadcom 3008 for 8 SAS3 ports, 1 M.2.

Using it for a Proxmox server in ZFS, up to 18 SSDs.

Neither. Don't use hardware RAID with ZFS. Period.

I'm confused more. Admittedly, I need to read more, but what is the suggested path forward using Prox and 16 drives connected to all those ports?

Edit: Oh, I think because ZFS is RAIDz not RAID. The question still stands about using onboard vs add-on card for Proxmox ZFS.

This is a FreeNAS, not a Proxmox forum. That being said, you need an HBA that does not interfere with your disks and the OS in any way. The OS must have direct access to the drive, including SMART data and everything. I'd go onboard if supported by the OS. If you can crossflash the 3008 to IT mode, do so.

HTH,
Patrick

The LSI3008 chip can be flashed to IT mode pretty easy and is working very reliable. (In my two production servers)
Only problem is there seems to be an issue with 11.3 and the driver for that chipset, see here and here.
