Hi guys,

I'm very new to freeNAS so please bear with me.

I installed an image to a USB and everything seems to go fine, I get the IP and everything. But when I restart or shut down the server, then start it back up, it seems like it is reinstalling and configuring it again. Is this normal?

Are your custom settings all still there (shares, users, passwords)? Can you post a screenshot of what's happening?

They're there. It just appeared to me as though it was reinstalling every time.

Thanks mate.

Yes, if you're unfamiliar with all the stuff that is going on and are just used to the boot sequence of Windows that doesn't share all of the nitty gritty details of what is going on it could look like it's reinstalling it and all that. If all of your settings and everything are staying between boots than what you are seeing is just the normal boot process and it just sharing with you all of the nitty gritty details for possible troubleshooting purposes in case there is an issue in the boot process.

It's nice in that if for whatever reason your FreeNAS becomes unable to boot you can tell exactly what is going on and come here to the forums with the exact error message that occured for example. However if Windows for example fails to boot properly, quite often it may be during the flag animation sequence and it just freezes there and all you can really do is just go "Well it's been stuck on the flag animation for like an hour now and isn't going anywhere." Not all that useful compared to being able to come in and go "It's stuck and frozen on 'starting devd'."

Haha, yes, it's going to take me some getting used to.

I'm having a bit of trouble accessing my share folder. I made a Windows share folder, enabled cifs under services, I type \\ip and get "web page cannot be found" what am I doing wrong please?

Are you typing the \\ip on your Windows machine in the run prompt?
