Installation FreeNas

Hi all,

I was a former user of a Synology Diskstation but find out later on that there are other possibilities, and I started to build my own NAS. The below list shows the items i used for the NAS. I guess that one is fine and powerful enough.

As I learned that the operation system needs a own drive I invested in a Samsung 840 Series Basic SSD with 120 GB.

That's actually my Hardware for the NAS.

I was then starting with OMV and got it fixed after a while, so the system was running but not that stable. That's why I was searching for a alternative and found by the way FreeNas where I already viewed a lot of the Video tutorials. The system sounds interesting to me, and I like to go for it.

What is causing me a bit headache, how I can re-install that system from OMV to FreeNas. What kind of work have I to do so I get a clean system setup?

I will of course do a backup of the files I have on the NAS right now, then I would create a USB drive from where I will install the FreeNas system into the SSD. Is it able to use Unetbootin for that purpose or are there any other easier ways?

What about the existing installation OMV how do I delete that one, or will that one get deleted when I do the FreeNas installation?

Hope you would give me some hints.

Unetbootin will not work, but the Guide does have instructions for either burning the image to the stick or installing from the iso. Once installed, if you use the ZFS Manager, it should format the disks for you, you can then restore the backup to the new pool.

Well just to understand right, I will download the ISO image and then my idea was to get the image on the usb from where I will install the ISO image into the SSD.. That's why I thought I need a start media program.

It won't work like you are planning. Please see the manual as there's a section for the 2 ways to install FreeNAS. But installing FROM USB is not supported at all.

:( Maybe you are right but I was somehow not sure if there was another way around. After I have found the manual I see what's able to do. I will follow that steps.

BTW, installing the OS on a 120Gb SSD is a waste of a SATA port and $$$'s.

FreeNAS will only use ~2Gb of it and you can't use the remaining free space for anything else. That's part of the reason, it's suggested to boot from a USB flash drive. Although the manual says you can use a 2Gb drive, go with a 4Gb drive.

Well I will go with a 4 GB USB stick, so I can use the SSD for my notebook. What about file sync, could I use Seafile for that task? Anybody of you have experience with that program?
