Installation doesn't detect hard drive

I'm trying to install FreeNAS 8.3.0 (for the first time) on one of my old computers. When I boot from the installation CD, it won't detect the computer's hard drive to install FreeNAS on. If external drives are plugged in, it will detect them. The internal drive currently has Windows XP on it and the computer boots happily from that drive. At the moment, I am unable to install FreeNAS.

Any ideas?

Your hard drive controller probably isn't supported. FreeNAS really prefers to be used on a USB stick anyway.

Thanks. So running FreeNAS from a plugged in USB stick is a viable option? And yes, I will read your guide - I've opened it already. :)

Yep. FreeNAS prefers USB because it's power efficient and saves you from using a precious Hard drive port.
