Install from usb stick to ssd

Hi folks, while i'm waiting for my main gear to show up i was trying to install freenas to an old rig that i have here doing nothing.

So i downloaded the last iso, 11.2-u6 and made a bootable usb stick with rufus.

When i try to put the system in boot mode from the usb stick computer does nothing and stays still. when i try to boot normally from the hd with windows installed it starts.

Thing is that now when i plug the bootable usb into my laptop it doesent get recognized by the file explorer, it only does the sound when you plug new hardware in but file explorer cant find it. I tried formatting it with the hp usb disk storage format tool but says that disk is write protected (even if i did the regedit "hack")

Any idea of why any of this is happening?
I tryed with another usb stick and same results, now i have 2 unrecognized usb sticks and no os on the nas.
What can i do?

as far as installing .. I have had better luck with burning the ISO to a disc in Windows and installing from a cd/dvd .. or if you have a mac, make a bootable install drive in MacOS (others have reported success via this method).

I have tried a couple different methods in windows to no avail with FreeNAS 11.2 .. I've had it "install' but had odd errors in FreeNAS that I haven't experienced after re-installing from a cd.

...and by the way, I just used and extra pc I had setup with a rom drive and plugged in the SSD I am now using in my FreeNAS box and installed and then put the drive in my FreeNAS box and configured

Stil cant figure why on the old system wont boot.

My new "rig" arrived today so i tested the usb stick immediately and it boots normally installing freenas.. I also managed to recover the other stick, simply formatting it with rufus into a non bootable drive.

Perhaps the old system doesn't recognize the usb stick as a bootable device. This would be a bios issue on the old motherboard.

If you run into that again I copied these directions to fix a non readable USB stick a while back into a text file.

If you have Windows 10, simply right-click on the Start button (bottom left of the screen) and choose Command Prompt (admin).
Now, at the prompt, type the following and press Enter after each command:
diskpart
list disk
select disk x (where x is the number of your non-working drive – use the capacity to work out which one it is)
attributes disk clear readonly
clean
create partition primary
format fs=fat32 (you can swap fat32 for ntfs if you only need to use the drive with Windows computers)
exit
