Installed FreeNAS 8.0.2 (AMD 64) on a Netfinity Z-Pro 9228:
12 GB FB Dimm
2x Xeon 5150
4x 2GB Seagate SATA RaidZ

USB Boot

And it (seeming) randomly reboots.. no warnings, no beeps. Is this a kernel panic? how do i diagnose and fix it?

I tried/verified that fsck is set to no background checking in /etc/cs.conf

ps I am a new to freeBSD... and will need some help with CLI.

This sounds like bad RAM, download a copy of memtest, burn it on a CD and let it run for several passes. In many years of computing I've rarely (2 or 3 times) had bad RAM, but this sounds like it could be one of those times for you.

I'll try that... and let you know the results.

i have un-ticked: Enable powerd (Power Saving Daemon) and that seems to have cleared any issues... so far the computer has been running for about an hour with AFP writes the entire time.

ps I hate that frog too.

Sounds like an ACPI bug. Can you please share more of your hardware details (CPU, motherboard, BIOS version, etc)?

IBM Intellistation Z-Pro 9228:

http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/systems/support/system_x_pdf/49y0114.pdf

The motherboard was manufactured by Foxconn for IBM. I don't know the model number.

Dual Xeon 5150 2.66MHz Dual Core 4MB L2 Cache
PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC (Now 8GB - there was a mem-test error)
NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 (256 MB)

BIOS 1.44

None of the diagnostic/error lights are on.

From http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-65209&brandind=5000004...

BIOS Version 1.45

Masked off m13err in the chipset. m13err is a recoverable error, there is no need to reboot the system when it occurs.

M13Err according to a quick google search is "Memory write error on first attempt." ( https://bitbucket.org/osunix/osunix-gate/src/8fcdb07a91c5/usr/src/uts/intel/io/intel_nb5000/nb5000.h ). Definitely update your BIOS, memtest your machine and check the machine's event logs.

The BIOS has been updated to 1.45.

memtest resulted no errors... before or after the bios update, i think the memory may not have been seated properly... who knows (i tested the initially offending memory in a different machine, also a Intellistation 9228, and again in the original machine)

I have not tuned on the 'Enable powerd (Power Saving Daemon)' i'm going to leave it off for a while to verify the system is stable, then turn it on to verify...

And i have updated to 8.0.3.

All is well with the power issue. Upgraded to 8/0/3 and also ticked 'Enable powerd (Power Saving Daemon)'. Thank you for your help.
