I Am just about to create my single vdev pool of 8 drives, I am pondering the mater of parity level, It is a file server that will be use primarily for media and back up, my specs are in the signature.
From what I have been able to gather, the raid levels would yield around 18,5 and 14,5 usable TB respectively. The latter is more then enough ATM, but I am unsure of how Z3 and Z2 would affect other aspects. Any input or recommendations would be appreciated. One case for Z3 would be that RMAs are slow here, but I have a drive "On shelf".

Beyond the obvious capacity loss, there's not much of a realistic difference. Yes, RAIDZ3 is slower, but the effect is negligible with proper hardware. It's also much safer, but RAIDZ2 is quite safe already.
