I have a mix of 4TB and 8TB drives, I am looking for some recommendations as to how I should implement the disks.

I have 6 8TB drives and 8 4TB drives. (~28TB free space combined between them)

The majority of storage is of movies and tv shows, but also store some music, home photos and videos.

I am coming from FlexRAID which I didn't have to worry so much about drive sizes as it would handle mixed volumes. It seems this is not recommended for FreeNAS even if it is technically possible? I would love to know why this is in more details.

Any help/recommendations is appreciated, thank you!

Hardware information is extremely important when diagnosing problems. This includes:
  • motherboard make and model
  • CPU make and model
  • RAM quantity
  • hard drives, quantity, model numbers, and RAID configuration
  • hard disk controllers
  • network cards

I was not asking to diagnose a problem but here is the info anyways...

MB - ASRock H110M-ITX
CPU - i5-4690k
RAM - 1 DIMM 8GB
HDD - 8 x Seagate 4TB ST4000
HDD - 6 x Seagate 8TB ST8000
HBA - SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8
NIC - Intel NIC onboard

What you don't really say about storage is what degree of redundancy is desired. With those drives, I would create a RAIDZ2 of each set of same-sized disks. That would give 24T of raw capacity for the 4TB disks and 32TB for the 8TB disks, a bit less than that usable. But it has decent redundancy.

Given your statement of 28 TB “free” I assume you already have data on your disks. You will have to “reformat” your drives to use ZFS and read back your stuff from backup. Just sayin’
