Hey all.

So I'm a n00b at freenas. I'm running 4X2TB HDD in RAIDZ and getting pretty bad speeds. So I did some reading and found some zfs tunables. I was just wondering how tunables work and what value goes where.

For instance I found this tunable vfs.zfs.txg.timeout="5" and how do I input that into freenas? I mean what goes into the variable, value and comment sections?

I read some stuff about changing the vm_kmem_size depending on your system but that with 64bit and freenas 8 they should be stable. Should I change it, if so what should they be?

My specs are:

CPU: Intel core 2 duo E6700 2.66Ghz
RAM: 2gig ddr2
HDD: 4X2TB in raidz
Using mobo sata controller.

Also are there any other tunables you could suggest for my system and their related values or should I just buy more ram?

Thanks in advance.

From the hardware requirements, "ZFS typically requires a minimum of 6 GB of RAM in order to provide good performance".

or should I just buy more ram?

Hi image132,

Yes, you should just buy more RAM.

Once you get up to the recommended minimum amount of RAM be sure you are using the 64bit version of FreeNAS.
