How can I tell if a disk is SMR?
My setup consists (relevantly) of one pool with two two-disk mirror vdevs, each made up of 10TB disks. I'd like to increase my storage capacity by adding one disk and converting everything to a RAIDZ2 group (yes, I know I have to completely restore the data from backup, not change the topology on the fly). I have a spare 12TB WD Elements drive that I'd like to shuck and use for this purpose, but how do I tell what's inside it?

The List of known SMR drives thread only says, for Elements disks, "Precise models vary and are not guaranteed; assume SMR in capacities below 8TB". Neither hdparm nor lshw tells me anything that makes sense to me.

Is it safe to use this disk for this purpose?

You will likely need to physically remove the drive and read the label.

I'm not aware of any use of SMR by WD in drives of that size which would be found in the Elements Chassis.

I have shucked 4 of those in the last 12 months and all are WDC WD120EDBZ-11B1HA0 (helium-filled CMR drives)
