How to speed up search through SMB?

Hi,

I just recently installed FreeNAS and I'd like to speed up searching through files.

My specs are:

Pentium G3220
ADATA SP600 120GB
8GB RAM (with integrated graphics)

What I want to accomplish is to have the function through the search bar be pretty fast.

I've got around 80GB of files and searching for one specific file or even "kind=picture" takes forever.

That's not sufficient detail for us to help you with.

Is that your FreeNAS server hardware?

What version of FreeNAS?

What are your pool disks and layout?

What settings have you made on the SMB service and on the share you're searching?

Thanks for the reply! Here are the details you requested.

Yes, those are the specs of my machine. There's an additional 320GB HDD, but it's really old (and slow) so I didn't want to store anything on it. It's formatted and has it's own pool.

Both my pools have this config:
  • Standard Sync
  • LZ4 Compresion
  • Atime on
  • ZFS Deduplication Off
Didn't touch advanced settings.

One pool is for the 120GB SSD, and the other for the 320GB HDD.

I have 1 data set on each of them, taking up the full size of the drives. The datasets inherit settings from the pool configs.

I have 2 shares, one for each drive with default settings. Only enable shadow copies is checked out of the 4 boxes.

I am running FreeNAS 11.3 Stable

The computer has a Gigabit connection to the router and I am using 5Ghz Wi-Fi to access the files.

I usually get speeds of 30-40MB per second sequential reading (singe file transfer).

The system is installed on a 32GB USB if that makes any difference.

Forgot to mention.

I'm using SMB with these parameters:

ea support = no
store dos attributes = no
map archive = no
map hidden = no
map readonly = no
map system = no

Read on this forum that these will make a difference, but I didn't see an improvement.

Also I think I chose Samba over Generic sync(or share?) somewhere, though I can't find the setting now.
