New to FreeNAS, trying to troubleshoot I/O issues on AD/DNS server resides on ESXi host which leverage shared iSCSI from FreenNAS 9.10.
Saw lots of log files within /var/log folder. some questions here.
1. How to export those files to my Window 7 desktop for easy reading?
2. Any document or tutorial explaining what those log files are and how to use them for troubleshooting?

Many Thanks,
Stephen

Thanks, could you please give me some command detail here? Not a UNIX expert here.
Using Putty, I can save SSH output, but not the *.log file itself. Could I use FileZilla here to download those /var/log file?

SSHing into your system will allow you to view the log files. Why do they have to be on the windows system?

If you still want to download them, you could rsync from within that same SSH session or use FTP. You will have to enable the FTP service. You might also need the right permissions to be able to FTP the files from /var/log. But I don't think that would be a problem.

The purpose of exporting the log is to keep a record. I will get a try tomorrow. Thanks!

No one keeps a record of their logs there is no reason. If you want to look at old log files you can find them in /var/log also. There will usually be ~10 files for each log.

Files can be copied from the FreeNAS system onto any other with scp or rsync. These are available in Cygwin on Windows or with standalone utilities like WinSCP.
