So far:
- Installed FreeNAS 9.1.0
- Created a "Media" volume
- Created several CIFS shares in "Media" (Photos, Movies, videos, etc..)
- Created user "Andy"
- Created group "Photos" and added "Andy" as a member

I can't figure out how to grant the "Photos" group permission to the "Photos" CIFS. It wants me to grant access to the entire volume.

Any advice would be great, very frustrating!

You should use DATASETS on your volume to alleviate this trouble.

if you dont have data there yet, remove the cifs shares
create a dataset for each of those categories
set your permissions on the dataset
create your CIFS shares
set your permissions to inherit

Thanks for your reply. I might not be desribing what I did properly. I do have data, but I can restore it again if needed.
I first created the volume and then did create the datasets. I did not set permissions on the datasets, but then created the CIFS. Does that make sense?

If these are already datasets, then just go into the permissions for that dataset and set them to the group you want. set your CIFS share to inherit permissions

I think I'm getting close. I really appreciate your help!

When I go in to set the permissions on a dataset, the defaults are root and wheel. I change them and save, but when I go back in they are back to the defaults.

Another issue I am having is setting permissions on folders in a dataset. I figured that out, but a user without permission to a folder can still see the folder and it asks them for credentials when they click on it. i would prefer they not even know the folder exists. Would I be better off creating sub-datasets instead of folders?
