I all, I'm due to replace my freeness 7 system (8x1tb on a usas-l8i) with more storage.

I will have a new intel server board and xeon with 8th ecc ram and most likely a intel rs2wc080 controller. The disk bays I have are 10 3.5" in two ss-500's.

Disk wise I'm not sure if I should go with 2tb or 3tb and then what raid configuration.

Was thinking 5x3tb in raidz with a hot spare (so if I add another 5 disks down the track I can hare the hot spare) or raidz2 with 10 2tbs 2 on the motherboard headers....

Not sure please give me your suggestions :)

Very personal opinion: I would wait for the second generation 3TB drives to start popping up before I buy one. I too am interested in their capacity, but I don't trust them. Not yet.

Also, be mindful that the larger a single array, the longer it will take to rebuild. If you're going to use 5 x 3TB I would strongly consider RAIDZ2 to guard against a second disk failure while you're busy resilvering your first failed disk.

IMO.
