just about to setup my first 'proper' server. a Dell Poweredge with 12 disks (150GB each), 64GB of RAM and 2 quad core AMD Opterons.
been looking at various OS options but after much research i think freeNAS corral is the perfect choice.
here we go...

Welcome to the forum!

Those small disks are going to use a lot of energy but won't provide much storage... have you thought about starting with, say, just a pair of 4TB drives in a mirror? You'd get a lot more storage and use a lot less energy.

Something to think about....

Good luck!

that is something to think about, thanks. think i'll start off with a single 2TB and add another when finances permit.

Best read up on how ZFS works and plan your pool arrangement before you start. You can't just add drives to a pool once it's created without destroying redundancy.

hi.
yes...i've been looking into that since i posted last. unsure about how to proceed as, at the moment, i can only stretch to one drive.

Mirrored pair vdevs are an option. You can expand your pool 2 drives at a time but you'll lose half the space to redundancy.

yeah...from the freebsd handbook...
'Note: A regular single disk vdev can be upgraded to a mirror vdev at any time with zpool attach'
don't mind losing half the space to redundancy. cheers for the pointer.
