Hi
So I'm having a RAIDz1 running and I'll extend it by three more disks in the next couple of days. To do so I have to back everything up first (copy over to different disks), delete the pool, create a new one. copy everything back over. Now what I don't want to do is recreate everything, everything as in permissions, jails etc. I do have backups of my FreeNAS config and I planned to copy everything in /mnt/Data over 1:1 to my other disks. My jails are in /mnt/Data/myjails. So lets's say I copied everything back 1:1 and uploaded the config, would I still have everything as it was before? Or do I have to set everything up back to the way it was manually?

I would probably do a clean manual setup depending on what version of FreeNAS you have.. I'm not sure if jails can be restored like that.. if you have a backup you can always try..

Isn't there some kind of backup I could create of the jails and then restore the backup?
Or create the jail and then copy everything over and replace it with the old jail files?

That will work, as long as the major version has not changed e.g. upgrading from a 9.x to a 9.x will work, from a 8.x to 9.x won't.

Yeah I have the newest version of FreeNAS, so this should work then. I sure hope so, some jails were a pain in the ass :x
What about permissions? Can I somehow get those back?

Permissions are separate as they are stored in the config database, which you should back up before upgrading.

Regarding the contents of the jails, use a backup program that preserves ownership, permissions, timestamps, etc.

I personally use tar, but most any backup app can be configured to preserve.

So what about storage I've added? From my main OS to the jails? If I back up a jail, wouldn't it then also back up all the contents of the added storage?

Edit: nevermind, I'm using duplicity and I can use --exclude to just exclude those dirs.
