Hi,

Since I upgraded to FreeNas 9 (I am now on FreeNas 9.3) from FreeNas 8, I can not start FTP service.
When I try to start it, I receive an error message "The service could not be started".

On the console log :
Sep 20 10:56:37 Hermes notifier: Starting proftpd.
Sep 20 10:56:37 Hermes notifier: 2015-09-20 10:56:37,500 Hermes.local proftpd[68269]: fatal: unknown configuration directive 'TLSRequired' on line 56 of '/usr/local/etc/proftpd.conf'
Sep 20 10:56:37 Hermes root: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/proftpd: WARNING: failed to start proftpd
Sep 20 10:56:37 Hermes notifier: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/proftpd: WARNING: failed to start proftpd

After some research on this forum, I have not found anything on the subject.
Thank you for your help.

Without you telling exactly how you updated from 8 to 9.3
I would GUESS that some where along the line the update
caused a missing file or two that has now resulted in error.
Please follow the steps in the manual and create a fresh
install of the latest FreeNAS version. You may have to
import your pool afterwards, but only do so through the GUI.

If the pool will not import via the GUI, return here for advice
before attempting anything via the CLI.

Thank for your answer Bigdave.
Since you asked, to update from FreeNas 8.2 to 9, I followed exactly this tutorial : http://www.durindel.fr/informatique/mise-a-jour-freenas-8-x-vers-9. In french, sorry.
No warning or error during this upgrade.

FTP not working being the only problem I have, I will avoid a fresh install for now. Anyway, thanks for the advice: I will keep it in mind for some day I will really really need FTP.

Me again. I found the problem.

In FreeNas 8.2, FTP configuration, advanced mode, I had put an auxiliary parameter : "TSL required on", along with some others parameters which were then needed.
And it is explicitely written in the information that these parameters are added to proftpd.conf.
In FreeNas 9.3, when I remove this parameter, FTP service starts!

I have found this bug report, which is not exactly my problem, but put me on the path to the solution: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/3526.

Well, problem solve. Thanks again. Hope it can help others...
