Ok guys, I updated my freenas to the latest version. Previous to this I had 9.2.1.7 which was running fine. Well the install went fine and I carried out the import of my disks, 2 x 1tb hdd's and this also went fine. I carried on with the config and had the server up and running as I wanted it to. Last night I went to view some files on the server and it stated that the server had gone away? Anyway, I had a look and for some reason one of my hdd's was no longer showing up? I attempted the reboot and still no 2nd hdd. I have tried everything I could but every time I attempt something it still comes up with an error and to check the pool status. I did notice though that the hdd now has 2 partitions, can the latest version of freenas have done this? I have trawled the net without luck. As a final question is there anything out there that I can use to pull the files from the hdd?

Forgot to add that both drives are visible under the storage catagory?

Thanks

first of all, calm down.

you have not provided us with any information, which we need to help troubleshoot.

A. How were your disks configured BEFORE the upgrade, and how were they configured AFTER the upgrade?

B. What hardware are we discussing here?

C. get to a command prompt (via ssh + putty if on windows), and provide us with:
zpool list
and
zpool status

include the output in [ code ][ /code ] tags in the forums

A. discs were just simple discs setup independently of each other, imported as NTFS drives and mounted as separate drives for media and music
B. It's a server that I built using standard pc components but enough to cope with the needs of freenas
C. I am unable to ssh into the server as it won't allow me but if I go to the shell cmd prompt and input zpool list it comes up with only the working drive

This server has worked flawlessly since I first built it and has only gone pear shaped since upgrading to the latest stable version?

WHOA!

NTFS drives?

That's a big No-No....

http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_storage.html#import-disk

The Volume ‣ Import Disk screen, shown in Figure 8.1f, is used to import a single disk that has been formatted with the UFS, NTFS, MSDOS, or EXT2/3 filesystem. The import is meant to be a temporary measure in order to copy the data from a disk to an existing ZFS dataset. Only one disk can be imported at a time.

NTFS drives are intended to be read-only in FreeNAS.

If these disks are NTFS, then you should connect them to a different OS. FreeNAS is not an appropriate fit for these disks.

Hmm, that's a strange one as this is the setup that it's always been. They were both imported as NTFS drives into the freenas server and then ZFS datasets were created with them. It has worked flawlessly since that day and many system upgrades only up until the upgrade to 9.3.1

I have attempted to connect the failed drive to an NTFS supported system ie Windows and although the drive shows up in disk management it is not accessible. I have mountains of media on that drive and don't want to lose it but looks like I'm gonna. I use CIFS shares to do what I need for adding and deleting files etc

I don't understand what you mean by importing as NTFS and creating ZFS datasets with them.

ZFS and NTFS are different file systems.

Once you created a ZFS volume, all NTFS data was lost.

Please explain in detail what your system actually consists of.

ok both drives were originally NTFS bare drives. I then fitted them into my newly built server and created ZFS volumes with them. But I keep referring them to NTFS as that's what they began as. But since I'm not fully up on the lower depths of freenas I just configured a simple media server. So both discs are ZFS volumes, one called music and the other called media. The music one is working fine but it's the media one that failed. When I bring up the freenas GUI it displays both discs as being present but only the music one has jails etc attached to it the other drive just doesn't show up at all except in the view drives tab.

Note I have now described them as volumes and not datasets

It's more likely that it was a UFS+GEOM setup...

Sounds to me like there were two single-drive pools. If so, then ...
for some reason one of my hdd's was no longer showing up?
Most likely one of the drives failed, so the pool that was on it is probably lost.
is there anything out there that I can use to pull the files from the hdd?
You could try GNU ddrescue.

It doesn't matter what they started out life as.

What matters is what they were formatted as for the NAS which is zfs.

yes they are now ZFS. Both drives as I said are showing up in the drive tab but only one will import and work the other "media" will not import. I've tried everything but nothing has worked. I've had a look at GNU but how does that work. If I can recover the drive via freenas that'd be great but I don't know where to go next?

GNU ddrescue is a tool for data recovery from a failing hard drive. Further explanation is way beyond the scope of this thread, not to mention off-topic for these forums.

If you just updated freenas, why are you trying to import anything?

This screams of UFS arrays, as I said.

FreeNAS 9.3 won't work with those and they have to be imported to ZFS pools.

Are you absolutely sure we're dealing with ZFS, @sinbrad ?

Yes, they are ZFS. As you said if they were UFS they wouldn't work but one does and the other doesn't. I carried out a complete fresh install of 9.3 because of the fault that emerged but the initial upgrade was a GUI update. Looks like I'm not going to get far with this one as I'm not knowledgeable and can only provide what I know which doesn't seem enough to solve my problem. So thanks anyway

Just for info if I go into the shell and get the zpool status the music volume appears and reports a clean bill of health, only the media one doesn't

What about zpool import media (replace media with the appropriate pool name).

What happens if you install 9.2.1.7 on another flash drive and boot off it? Can you see the other disk?

I tried that and used the same command ie zpool import media, it didn't work as it came up with something along the lines of pool doesn't exist?

Tried that as well and it still showed both disks in the view disks tab but won't allow me to import and comes up with the same error. I even went back as far as version 8x as I keep all my back up files for each version just in case but it seems that what ever has happened in 9.3.1 has caused the effect to be replicated on all versions. I am pretty good with computers etc and only come on forums as a last resort as I know it takes a lot of time for help to come as sometimes it's easier to see what's in front of you rather than having to rely on someone providing the information that's needed
