Hello,

I'm running TrueNAS-12.0-U8.1

I'd like to install FreePBX in a jail on in a VM.

I've been looking around in the forum but I only found threads from 2016.

Few questions:

1) Is it a good idea to install FreePBX in TrueNAS and why?

I was surprise to see there's no community plugin so I figured there might be a reason why it's no a good idea

2) If it is indeed a good idea, should I install it in a iocage or in a VM?

Thank you!

I've played with FreePBX in the past, and while I haven't used it recently, I'd probably stick with the provided distro, which makes setup a breeze. As such, I'd recommend doing it via a VM. However if you know what you're doing, you could also easily use jails or docker containers to run FreePBX.

FreePBX is kind of an odd solution. It's generally unnecessary in the home space any more (what with everyone having cell phones now), so it's mostly a business level product. However, for most businesses, even small ones, the phone system is so critical that it's usually worth paying for fully support onsite PDX or a highly available cloud-based solution. So FreePBX sort of fits into the tiny niche of product for small businesses that don't do a lot of business over the phone, but have enough IT talent to manage open source software. Which explains why there's not a ton of community activity around it.

If this is for a business case, you're putting a lot of eggs into one basket running your phone system on your NAS, something goes wrong, and now you've lost both your data and your phones.
