I have just built a pc to be used as a storage server and my brother has bought a zyxel nas540.
Currently we both have 2 hard drives, and the plan is to use half of our storage as external backup for each other. More drives to be added when needed.
My plan was to create one zpool for each drive and therefore have no redundancy. I think this would be ok since I have remote backup and can live with quite long downtime.
Is FreeNAS right for me? Do zfs have any purpose in this case?

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
opteron 3350
8 GB ECC ram
2 x 4 TB WD red
