One of my customers has got a problem with ransomware/cryptware; the files on his local pc (windows 7 pro) are encrypted, probably through de cerber virus. Does FreeNAS offer any protection against ransomware or cryptware, or should users be informed that this kind of problems may affect NAS systems (FreeNAS) too? Of course I understand the importance of external back-ups.

Properly scheduled snapshots can help a lot in protecting against ransomware. Ransomware will likely try to encrypt network shares, but by default snapshots are not visible via sharing.

And snapshots are read only. Thus assuming snapshots going back to before the encryption occurred, it's a simple matter to clone or rollback to the snapshot in order to restore the files.

Make sure you clean the infected PC first.
100% sure, otherwise the obvious will happen.
