Freenas SMB Sharing remotely

Hi this is my first freeNAS server and first post on the forums. I managed to get my server up and running with an SMB storage share and a plex server that I can access remotely. I would like to be able to access my files remotely through a VPN and I don't know how to set it up on the FreeNAS machine. I can't seem to find a guide that works on the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want it secure so my files can't be tracked. I have SSH and SFTP setup but I am told its not so secure and I have problems uploading large files through SFTP which cause my internet to crash. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
