Hi,

So I setup an Rsync task from my physical freenas box to a VM freenas box on my home network. I have this same Rsync setup with a 2nd physical FreeNAS box (again for Rsync backup) - it works fine on the physical box.

It was working on the FreeNAS VM but i noticed that the newer files werent showing up unless I did a manual run of the rsync task (strange).

This morning I looked at the physical FreeNAS box & saw this (Rsyncing to the VM):

Code:
Oct 23 09:04:35 Nas1 rsync: rsync: failed to set times on "/Shared/Scans" (in VM-shared): Operation not permitted (1)
Oct 23 09:04:36 Nas1 rsync: rsync: failed to set times on "/Shared/Scans/2016s" (in VM-shared): Operation not permitted (1)
Oct 23 09:04:37 Nas1 rsync: rsync: [sender] write error: Broken pipe (32)
Oct 23 09:04:37 Nas1 rsync: rsync: mkstemp "/Shared/Scans/.magicolor_1690MF_161018063404_0001.pdf.nE3Hlb" (in VM-shared) failed: Permission denied (13)
Oct 23 09:04:37 Nas1 rsync: rsync: mkstemp "/Shared/Scans/.magicolor_1690MF_161018063421_0001.pdf.4EGBSg" (in VM-shared) failed: Permission denied (13)

Oct 23 09:04:37 Nas1 rsync: rsync: mkstemp "/Shared/Scans/.magicolor_1690MF_161018063741_0001.pdf.GEBq4g" (in VM-shared) failed: Permission denied (13)
Oct 23 09:04:37 Nas1 rsync: rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at io.c(820) [sender=3.1.2]

Seems like a permissions error (maybe) - but it was working at one point.

Any ideas what i can check?

Thanks,
Rich

Permissions. does the rsync user have access to those?

ls -la /Shared/Scans/

is those files maybe open in time?

Hi,

The Rsync user (richtj99) has permissions to the dataset and is also the same user in the Rsync push module, and the Rsync task.

On the other end, the rsync user (rich) has permissions to the dataset (rich).

Thanks,
Rich

The file permissions on the FreeNAS box sending the rsync data are to richtj99 - the same as the dataset permissions

May be a long shot, but read my thread "Impaired rsync permissions support for Windows datasets". It may turn out that toggling your rsync task's 'Archive', 'Preserve permissions' and/or 'Preserve extended attributes' settings will help.

Also, another long shot... but make sure the UID for user 'richtj99' is the same on both instances of FreeNAS.

EDIT: Scratch the UID business; I see you're using different user accounts on each instance.

So I changed the permissions so richt99 was the same on both, changed the UID so it was the same on both.

The strange thing is that if i goto tasks on the physcial freenas box sending the data, click tasks, rsync, then run - it syncs fine to the VM freenas box.

The settings are to run every 9 hours but it doesnt seem to run (or the files on the other end arent updated via the schedule).

A manual run will work but the every 9 hour thing isnt working.

Now my physical freenas to physical freenas rsync on the same tasks page works perfectly. I just dont get it.

So current status: Manual run works, scheduled sync doesnt work.

Do you specify the same user account (richtj99) for your rsync tasks? Or do you run these as root?

Ummm... Show us how you have the schedule set up. You sorta indicated above that rsync itself works fine. It may just be the scheduling is just dorked up somehow.
