Hi,

I have been using freenas 7 for some time and now freenas 8.
I have several shares setup for my ubuntu desktop, where I mount the shares in fstab.

My freenas box is setup using DNCP, and althought the IP address of the NAS box does not change very often, there is the possibility for it to.

I have always set up my mounts by referring to freenas.local and this has worked fine for freenas 7.

In my new freenas 8 setup (FreeNAS 8.2 BETA 4) my Unbutu box cannot resolve freenas.local.

I will admit that I now next to nothing about networking, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Does anyone know if this should work and if so why it is not ?

Many thanks
Ian

No stupid questions here. And that particular question doesn't have the most clear of answers. The short short short versions is, if you are connecting via CIFS, you'll want to make your CIFS server act as the "master browser." That's a check box located in the CIFS service options.

If you are connecting via NFS, then likely something is borked with DNS. I don't think this is going to be the option though, since managing DNS usually means a level of networking knowledge above "next to nothing." ;)

Check that master browser option, give it an hour, and then see if you can ping freenas.local.

Jul 11 19:48:50 freenas notifier: Reloading winbindd

I understand that avahi is a zeroconf daemon which I think should help my case.

Anyone know why "avahi_daemon_enable is NO" and can I change this ?

Thanks
Ian

A reboot after turning on CIFS appears to have fixed it.

I can now ping freenas.local from my Ubuntu machine.

Thanks
Ian
