My FreeNAS has started to freeze, including the console as well.
it may have something to do with the 9.3 update, but I am not sure.

What are some log files I could look at to try to diagnose this?

Hardware and exact freenas version. Also are there error messages in the console?

This type of thing sounds like bad hardware component.

Sorry I took so long to reply,
This is a custom built computer running Esxi 5.5

The server specs are
i7 2600 3.40Ghz
24 GB Ram
4 2TB data drive (Mixed brands) 5400 RPMs
1 500GB for VM OS

There are currently 4 VMs running including FreeNAS.
FreeNas has 12GB allocated to it.

I have 4 2TB drives that are in a JBOD. Each of these has a 2TB virtual drive that is then connect to FreeNas (I know this is a terrible way to run Freenas but I am on a budget). FreeNas then has the 4 Virtual drives in a RAIDz volume

The console has error messages but it is SMTP errors (See here http://imgur.com/etRVqSu ), I don't think that would cause a crash like this would it?

Just to be clear only FreeNas freezes non of the other VMs are affected.

Interestingly FreeNas has not frozen sense my last post on Sunday, but Sunday it froze 3 times with in a 5 hour period. But I was really hitting it hard with filecopies. This week has been very mild usage.

Lol this configuration is acting as expected. Virtual drives don't support zfs and you shouldn't do this.

Really!?
I know ZFS wants direct access to the drives, and you loose a lot of features and performance using virtual drives, but I didn't know it was unsupported. My original intention was to pass though the drives giving FreeNas dirrect access but I found out to late my motherboard doesn't support this. :(

All the features of zfs are worthless when you don't use direct disk access and will cause problems most of the time.
