Multi-PC network - OS on various machines - Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10
All of the PCs can access and browse CIFS shares except one with Windows 10. The error returned is the path not found. The diagnostics indicate that the PC is configured properly but the FreeNAS device is not responding.

This PC can see and browse files on all of the other PCs but not the FreeNAS CIFS. It can also browse the internet. All ethernet adapter properties match the other PCs. I have reviewed the adapter TCP/IPv4 settings and all exactly match the other PCs on the net. I have checked Windows credentials and made sure user names and passwords are a match for FreeNAS. I have made sure the DNS is flushed and registered. I have released and renewed the IP. I have refreshed the registry winsock and winsock2 entries. I have disabled the Firewall, turned off real time virus settings.

I am really at a loss as to what to do next. The other Windows 10 PC works just fine.

This PC worked just fine with our old but now crashed Linux/SAMBA server. There were legacy drive maps to the old server but I have deleted all that.

FreeNAS 9.10 was just downloaded and installed. It is the most current version. Install was default settings. The only shares that exist are CIFS Windows shares.

Does anybody have any further suggestions?

I'm getting excited. The answer is yes, I can see the shares and browse by using the \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx address of FreeNAS. But why couldn't it resolve the name?

NetBIOS name resolution is ill-tempered on the best of days. You might want to make sure that it's enabled on your Windows 10 client. Otherwise, I'd look into setting up an internal DNS / forwarder for your network, and use DNS for name resolution. It's much more reliable than netbios name lookups.

I always assumed our router, which is the DHCP server, also acts as the LAN DNS and that all names get resolved through it. I think that is what you mean by internal DNS. I will look into your suggestion further. Perhaps DNS name resolution has been by chance. In the mean time, I think we call this whole situation resolved. I can limp along with the raw IP for a while... THANK YOU!!! BTW: FreeNAS is a life saver. I had my network back up in 1 day after the old server crashed. Easy Breezy.
